Allison Stokke and Alyce Caron
Allison Stokke, born in Newport Beach in March 1989, is one of the most well-known and wealthy Pole Vaulters. The picture she posted at her 17th birthday celebration in 2007 was a huge hit, and it made her into a Pole Vaulter. Instagram and Twitter have helped her build an enormous social fan base. Stokke is an incredibly well-known track and field athlete similar to Jessica Ennis Hill. Los Angeles Times and others noted that Stokke didn't seek out and encourage this kind of the attention. Brett Hutchins and David Rowe in Technology Power and Culture in the Network Society, linked Stokke's situation to American soccer players Alex Morgan and Hope Solo. Both women were accused of sexual harassment and the public image of them was framed in a way they claimed was devaluing their sporting achievements. Regarding Stokke they also noted that comments on social media often referred to as insulting and attributed the process of sexualization on women. Others drew parallels with Brandi Chastain's celebration of her victory at the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Final wearing a sports bra. Women's sporting moments were overshadowed by the discussion of their looks. Stokke was photographed in New York by a Californian reporter for an event and track online website in the early part of 2007. With Leather, a popular sports website that attracts many male readers and re-posted the image in May, under the heading Pole Vaulting Is Sexy Barely legal. Matt Ufford had threatened to take action against the photographer for failing to removing the image. The story was popular and been receiving a lot of attention.
